Spencer: Stimulus Cash May Mean Incentives for China’s Electric Car Makers 76 mins ago

A January 6 report by Patti Waldmeir in the Financial Times forecasts that the state stimulus plan will be used to offer incentives to Chinese companies engaged in the manufacture of cars run on clean energy.

This policy development is a welcome one for investors looking for ways to profit from the stimulus plan and may point to good growth prospects for manufacturers of electric-powered cars. Gordon Orr, director of McKinsey and Company, predicted in an October 2008 article entitled ‘Seven ways China will surprise us in 2009’ that investment in the electric-powered automotive sector may produce a “Ford Motor of the 21st Century” catering to demand in both domestic and international markets. Investors seem to think the sector has a big future too -- in September 2008 MidAmerican Energy, controlled by Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A), paid $231 million for a stake in BYD (1121.HK). BYD is the parent company of BYD Auto, whose F3DM electric-hybrid was released domestically less than a month ago and is expecting an international launch in 2011.
