China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII), China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 941.HK) and major telecom equipment providers held a conference in Beijing last week and a conference attendee said that China will release the first group of TD-SCDMA handsets in October and November this year, reports Sina. The source said China will release two million to three million TD-SCDMA phone numbers from late 2007 to early 2008 and will release 12 million numbers in the first half of 2008. TD-SCDMA handset chip testing will start in August and will last for two months. According to a China Business News report, drafting of China's handset mobile TV standard TDBM is complete and that equipment and terminal products are ready for the market. TDBM is a handset mobile TV standard based on the TD-SCDMA standard. The TDBM standard will be officially released by the end of this year, said a Datang Mobile executive. The Datang Mobile employee said China Mobile may add TDBM mobile TV functionality to its customized TD-SCDMA handsets if the TDBM standard gets approval.
