Chinese enterprise software company Ninetowns Internet Technology Group Company Limited (Nasdaq: NINE) has laid off 140 employees in its online business-to-business (B2B) department, reports 163.com. The report reproduced an internal email to Ninetowns employees saying it would shut down its Search Engine department and transfer that business to the Search Engine Center department. Ninetowns confirmed that it has made lay-offs in the B2B department but that some employees will be transferred to other departments and that Ninetowns will continue to develop its B2B business. Ninetowns acquired Beijing based English-language B2B search engine Yaphon (www.yaphon.com) for US$27 million in April 2006 and operates the B2B search site Tootoo.com. Ninetowns said the TooToo site will continue to function.
