Qingdao's Hu Shan Road Elementary began classes on March 18 as the nation's first solar-powered elementary school, reports cnr.cn. Every day the school generates an average of 120-150KW of electricity, according to a teacher surnamed Qing. The school provides heat to its 30 classrooms with a 600 square meter solar-powered heating system that is automatically turned on when temperatures fall below 18 degrees Celsius, reports topenergy.org. The school also boasts 165 solar street lights and classroom lighting, said the topenergy.org report.
