Chinese private education company New Oriental Education & Technology Group Inc. (NYSE: EDU) president Yu Minhong has negotiated with education bureaus in earthquake-ravaged areas of Sichuan regarding the construction of four Hope Schools (Xiwang Xuexiao), reports The Beijing News. New Oriental intends to build the schools and staff them with New Oriental teachers, said the report. New Oriental's public relations manager said the company has yet to determine the final investment amount for the rebuilding project or the number of schools that will be built.
New Oriental announced on Monday that it planned to spend RMB 5 million on primary school reconstruction Deyang, Sichuan and intended to send teachers to the area for instruction and teacher training. Hope Schools provide free education to underprivileged rural children through donations and volunteer services.
