China Telecom (NYSE: CHA, 728.HK) plans to spend RMB 8.6 billion on repairs to its network in earthquake-stricken areas, reports West China City Daily. According to the report, China Telecom has restored communication access in a total of 518 affected counties by June 9. China Telecom has to date spent RMB 960 million repairing equipment damage caused by the earthquake, said the report. The report also mentioned that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU, 762.HK, 600050.SH) subsidiary Sichuan Unicom plans to donate RMB 5 for every new subscriber that signs up with a mobile number starting with "130", "131", "132" or "156". China Unicom expects to spend a total of RMB 2.8 billion repairing its networks in earthquake-affected areas.
