China Embracing eBooks

eBooks are gaining in popularity and more than a quarter of population are reading eBooks, People.com.cn reports. According to the Fourth China Reading Survey, 60.4 percent of Chinese people were reading traditional books in 1999, though the percentage dropped to 54.2 percent in 2001, 51.7 percent in 2003 and 48.7 percent in 2005. According to the report, in 1999, 3.7 percent of Chinese people were reading eBooks, compared with 18.3 percent in 2003 and 27.8 percent in 2005. By May of 2006, China had over 400 publishing houses, with over 80 percent publishing content online.
