Yahoo! China announced the launch of its 1 gigabyte free email at a Beijing press conference Monday afternoon. According to Yahoo!, the 1G email is open to all Internet users. Any new or existing Yahoo! email users who also logon to Yahoo! Messenger can have their email quota upgraded to 1G. Yahoo! China stated most of the email servers are hosted locally, with firewall, anti-spam, and anti-virus protection features. Yahoo! is not the only company to follow Google in launching 1G email services. A PChome report last Wednesday revealed that Microsoft had quietly launched a 2G free email service. PChome posted a step-by-step guide instructing users on applying for a 2G MSN account. Pacific Epoch followed PChome's instructions and obtained a 2G MSN account. Over the weekend we dumped more than 350 megabytes worth of files into the account as a test. Microsoft told press last Friday that the 2G email offering was released to the public by mistake and changed the quota back to 2 megabytes. Pacific Epoch then retried PChome's application procedure but only obtained a 2 megabyte account. However, the 2G free account we registered earlier still works.
