Bertelsmann is in negotiations with companies and government departments regarding entry into the TV program production market in China, Bertelsmann chairman Gunter Thielen recently told International Herald Leader. However, the company has no plans to set up a joint venture in China at present. Thielen said that it is still impossible for a foreign company to acquire TV channels in China, but Bertelsmann may produce programs in cooperation with Chinese partners. Bertelsmann will open another 40 to 50 bookstores in China in 2005 and expand the number of book club members. In 2004, Bertelsmann opened 40 bookstores in China. Bertelsmann's book club in China currently has 1.5 million members.
