Google China Launches MP3 Search, Invests In Top100.cn
Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) China launched its MP3 search service (www.google.cn/music) on Tuesday. The service uses content from Beijing-based music site Top100.cn to allow users to listen to and download free music and lyrics, and links to China Mobile (NYSE: CHL, 941.HK) wireless music platform 12530.com to serve up for-a-fee ringtones. Users can search MP3s by singer, song title or album, or browse music rankings offered in drop down lists just below the channel's search bar. MP3 search is not currently listed on Google China's homepage.
Google China announced an investment in the Top100.cn on Tuesday, reports Sina. Top100.cn removed music downloading fees -- previously RMB 1 per song -- on August 1 to correlate with Google China's free MP3 search, according to Top100.cn CEO Chen Gegang. According to the report, the Google China investment is the second round for Top100.cn, coming after a rumored first round, speculated to have occurred in 2005, of $3 million from NBA star Yao Ming and others.
