China Mobile Offers Its Own IM
China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 941.HK) China Mobile has internally announced a new regulation regarding mobile instant messaging (IM) services, reports China Business News quoting China Mobile insiders. An executive from a Beijing SP confirmed that they have received the notice. According to the notice, China Mobile has released its own mobile IM service called "Fei Xin" which includes free SMS, voice chatting and dating functions. The notice requests all existing mobile IM service providers to stop their service before December 31, 2006. Beginning June 1, China Mobile will not approve any new mobile IM service applications and will not provide marketing cooperation for existing mobile IM service providers. Recommendations for other mobile IM on Monternet and embedded mobile IM services on STK cards and handsets will also be removed by China Mobile. The report quoted another insider saying that mobile IM service providers will provide technology support for China Mobile's "Fei Xin" service and share revenue with China Mobile.
